Art & Meditation for Children

At Sprites we do everything with a holistic approach, meaning we “greet” each child as a whole, embracing the body, the mind & the Spirit. The main three tools we work with are art, meditation & stories…

Meditation for children holds many benefits. It teaches them to “breathe” through life, with confidence, self worth and self control.

Physically it helps each child to be “in” their body, encouraging focus & a level of center.

It encourages children to expand their imaginations and learn the value of “quiet time”.

Meditation can empower your child to discover “who they are” and explore life with self belief. It creates awareness that there is more to life & their physicality than what we can physically touch. The silence brings a “knowing” of what they need for their day or that difficult lesson … and so on.

It enables a child to sense different feelings and in time “choose” which feels good, so that they may recall “good thoughts and feelings” in times of distress and anxiety. The space to express themselves is offered, affirming they are loved, safe and supported.

This time of silence and rest, will teach a child to maintain focus & know their inner world. To have trust in him/herself and life around him/her. Each day growing in the knowledge that each child, each person in this world is a unique and very special individual who deserves all the gifts that life has to offer.

Art is a tool which children often use to express the “inexpressible”, when they do not have the words they more often than not have the pictures…. It can be an amazing form of communication between child & adult, an invitation for a brief while into their world of imagination, play & feelings.

Art helps build upon cognitive skills, brain & hand co ordination & manipulation. It assists fine finger movement. Art is a child’s initial way of forming letters & numbers. And most of all it is fun, there are no rules or expectations, just the delicious uninhibited sensation of creating with sand, clay, paints – even making dough for biscuits.

Stories have been told for ages old. Traditions & wisdom have been passed to generations through stories – stories of life. Children love stories, the wonder & magic without any additional explanation from an adult simply delivering its secrets as the tale unfolds. The stories become real as they are told, the child experiences a whole range of emotions within just one story told. Their imaginations as they allow themselves to be absorbed into the words are alight with pictures & colour.

The stories told at sprites are all fairy tales & fables. They all have meaning; they hold messages of love & pearls of wisdom ….

And besides what would childhood be without fairy stories.
